It is the sequel to Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and the second installment in the film series. It was released on September 27, 2014.

Plot

After Flint Lockwood and his friends save the world from the food storm in the first film, super-inventor Chester Vesen, the CEO of Live Corp and was Flint's childhood idol, is tasked to clean the island. He relocates Flint, his friends, and the citizens of Swallow Falls (temporarily) to San Francisco. Unbeknownst to Flint and his friends, the FLSDFR survived the explosion and has landed in the center of the island, and Chester is determined to find it. Chester invites Flint to work at Live Corp, where he meets Chester's ape assistant Barb, and she sends Flint on a very fast twisted elevator ride (with some other Live Corp members) to his own "work and study" room. Six months later, Flint accidentally humiliates himself during a promotion ceremony when his newest invention, the "Celebrationator", explodes with paint and glitter after he didn't get the inventor promotion. Sad and lonely, Flint walks back to the apartment and quickly leaves a recorded message to Sam. Meanwhile, Chester is back at the stage where the promotion ceremony was and Barb informs him that his search-parties X and Y have lost sign of the FLSDFR for his new 8.0 food bar update, Eventually Chester realizes that he needs someone "expendable", some who "knows an island from the inside out", someone who is "smart but still naive", someone who "plays hip rock bottom" and "would do just about anything he asks for" and when Barb asks him where will they find someone very desperate, Chester turns her attention towards the paint and glitter explosion mark area and says "I think we already have". When Flint arrives at the apartment, he begins to lie down in bed and breaks down in tears. Later, Chester invites Flint to his office in Live Corp to discuss a meeting. When Flint arrives at Chester's office in Live Corp, Chester shows Flint that the clean up back at Swallow Falls, 3 days later, after the clean up began, the island has been attacked by food creatures called cheespiders (a combination of a cheeseburger and a spider) which are trying to learn how to swim. Seemingly fearing the world's invasion, Chester missions Flint to find the FLSDFR and shut it down for good using an orange USB. Despite Chester's warning to keep the mission a secret (temporarily), Flint recruits meteorologist Sam; her camera-man Manny; cop Earl Devereaux; Steve, Flint's monkey sidekick who communicates using a device on his chest; and Brent who now gets called "Chicken Brent". Much to Flint's dismay, his father Tim joins the crew and they travel to Swallow Falls on his boat (which he mostly goes fishing on it).

Once arriving at Swallow Falls, they notice that a jungle-like environment made of foods has overgrown the island. Tim stays behind while Flint and the others investigate, once as they enter the deserted town, they find a Live Corp lab which was the same lab covered in spider webs made out of cheese which Barry eats the orange USB that Chester gave Flint earlier. Tim, searching for sardines at his abandoned bait and tackle shop, encounters a family of pickles and bonds with them by fishing. Chester discovers that Flint allowed his friends to join him on the mission, so he travels to the island with Barb and his holograms, to separate Flint from his friends. When Chester's helicopter arrives just in time to save the group from a Cheespider. Flint then finds his old house and lab. Flint, Chester, Steve, Barb and Sam climb up the orange pipe-tube that leads to the door of Flint's lab, once arrived, they find out that the lab's computer died. Eventually Chester discovers that Flint wears wedgie-proof underwear just like he does, which reveals that they have both been wearing the same underwear ever since they were younger kids. Barb's job was to hold onto Flint's and Chester's wedgie-proof underwear (which she was annoyed with) while Flint and Chester go bungee jumping to grab equipment to build a tracking device to use so Flint can contact the FLSDFR's location, After the bungee jumping work is done, the scene ends with Flint and Chester heading out the lab while Barb was still holding onto their wedgie-proof underwear and then releases their underwear back at Flint and Chester. The next day, After escaping a Tacodile (a combination of a taco and a crocodile) attack, Sam notices that the foodimal was sort of protecting it's family, and begins to suspiciously suspect Chester is up to no good. Sam attempts to convince Flint to spare the foodimals, but Flint is somehow intent on Chester. Sam leaves depressed, and Flint's other companions go with her (including Steve). In the jungle, with Flint separated from his friends, The Cheespider shows up against the group and realize the reason why the Cheespider tried to attack them earlier was because the backpacks they had were Live Corp backpacks. Manny notices Sam's suspicious suspects when he reverses the Live Corp logo on his camera to reveal the "Live" as "Evil" but spelled backwards. In addition, Sam realizes that the foodimals really mean no harm. They also learn that the foodimals have already knew the truth about Live Corp the whole time. Upon realizing what Chester is really up to, just has the group is about to go warn Flint, the group gets ambushed by the Corp employees. Barry (the Strawberry) and his people see this and Barry gets prevented from trying to go save them, Barry knew they had to go get help.

Flint, Chester and Barb arrive at the candy mountain and find the FLSDFR, but Flint notices a family of friendly marshmallows and becomes hesitant to shut down the machine. Immediately, Chester seizes the control of the FLSDFR and announces his plot to make his food bar 8.0 update out of the foodimals. After Flint and Chester fight, the orange USB flies thru mid-air and lands into the machine and automatically re-programmes the machine. Immediately, Flint gets crushed and is knocked off and lands into the river but rescued by the marshmallows. The marshmallows take Flint to his father, and Flint explains to his father about Chester's plan. So Flint, his father and the foodimals all work together to build a giant fishing rod to send Flint and Barry into the unfinished part of the Evil Corp factory building that was still under construction on the island. Barry frees the trapped foodimals and battles the Corp employees, while an angry Flint fights Chester and his holograms, who reveals that he will make his friends into foodbars for the 8.0 update. Chester uses is numerous holograms of himself to beset Flint, but Flint uses the Celebrationator by getting Steve to break free and press it's button, making the real Chester get covered in paint and glitter, allowing Flint to grab the remote and rescue his friends. Chester was still not giving up, he goes and grabs the FLSDFR and when he is about to escape, A massive army of foodimals led by Barry (in a robot suit) arrive and fight Chester by surrounding him with Flint and his group. Chester eventually tries to getaway with the FLSDFR, but gets thwarted by Barb, who has absorbed a change of heart from Flint and his friends and she snatches the machine right out of Chester's arms, causing Chester to fall into his mega-sized food bar machine getting bounced around and just as he reaches the exit, Chester gets devoured/eaten by the Cheespider spitting out his orange vest which leaves the group with a disgusted groan. The next morning, with the island free from Evil Corp's control, Flint returns the FLSDFR to the candy mountain and frees it from the orange USB's control and the foodimals continue to live in peace as more are produced. The film ends with Flint fishing with his father, finding it enjoyable and Flint actually catches his first fish.

In the post-credits scene, Barb was trying to ask Steve out and he was trying to eat a banana sandwich.
