Greetings, great master! The heavens have opened, your wishes will be... granted, for I am Longzhu!

Long is one of the two deuteragonists of the 2021 film Wish Dragon. He is a magical dragon who had been stuck in his teapot for a thousand years and has the capability to grant three wishes.

Background[]

Born into royalty as Longzhu, Long falsely learned at a young age that gold was power. Growing up, he worked towards increasing his wealth, expanding his borders, setting his "subjects" to labor and build him monuments to himself, doing everything he could to increase his power, including ignoring payment pleads by his subjects. He married his daughters off to wealthy families, sent his son to war, only to coldly rebuff his son's "return as a hero" when his son fell in battle, and at the end of his life, when Long laid upon his deathbed, he expected to be surrounded by his family, friends, and subjects.

But he was alone, because Long had never understood nor appreciated the people in his life beyond anything more than means to increase his wealth and power, thus no one truly loved or cared about him, and so he died cursing his fate, blind to his own faults.

Instead of being welcomed into the heavens, as he expected, Long was punished by the gods who transformed Long into a dragon. Long tried fleeing, but was instantly sucked and bound to a jade Teapot, tasked with serving ten masters by granting each one three wishes, along with the assignment of learning the true meaning of life.

Personality[]

When introduced (or rather introducing himself), Long displayed an obviously inflated ego and enjoyed showing off his powers and apparent magnificence to Din Song, whom he immediately considered a "peasant boy", reflecting his past life as a human lord, and continues to act as some uppercrust noble while treating others as peasants.

Tasked by the Heavens to serve ten masters (and learn the true meaning of life) before he may ascend to the Spirit World, Long is eager and impatient to fulfill his obligation and encourages/pressures his masters to use their wishes quickly, and was especially eager for Din to use all his wishes since Din was his final master to serve.

Long showed himself to be very arrogant and impatient with Din, yet awed and fascinated by the marvels of the modern age, having been in his teapot since the Qing Dynasty (which spanned the years of 1636 to 1912) before serving his prior master. Regardless, Long displayed some understanding, albeit biased, of humans that so very often the thing they want most is wealth, which actually depressed him to an extent and even embittered him somewhat to humanity. He was baffled and annoyed that Din wanted to use his wishes to restore his friendship with Li Na Wang but correctly suspected Din had his own doubts when the boy lied to Li Na about his identity.

But after seeing Din and Li Na reconnect in their old neighborhood and with their old friends and neighbors, Long soon came to understand what he had been missing for centuries, that it is family and friends that truly make life worthwhile. The love and closeness he saw in Din, Li Na and their neighbors left such an impression that Long, after Din was embittered by Li Na's rejection and decided to use his last wish to be rich, chose to reveal his past to Din of how he'd lived his life for wealth and power and died alone and unmourned and wound up being punished by the heavens for his selfish life. What he'd seen and learned from Din and those close to him had finally taught Long what had eluded him for thousands of years, leaving him humbled and now appreciative of the things in life that no amount of gold could ever buy: love, friendship, family.

When Pockets tried to kill Din, Long sacrificed himself to save him and although his sacrifice and learning the lesson he was always intended to learn earned him the right to finally pass on into heaven, Long ultimately passed it up to help Din; who had one wish left, thus; had to begin his original sentence anew and serve an additional ten masters.

But this time, Long faced this mission with his faith in humanity restored and parted with Din as friends, Din wishing Long luck by saying they'd see each other again, one day.

Otherwise, Long had a sarcastic wit and dry sense of humor.

Physical appearance[]

Long appears as an Asian dragon with fine fur colored in a few different shades of pink, blue eyes, a purple mane, mustache, goatee and tuft at the end of his tail, small antlers, and a pair of arms and legs while the rest of his body is serpentine.

In human form, Long appears as a middle-aged well-dressed imperial lord with golden and black apparel, retaining a face familiar to his dragon form.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Wish Granting: As Long was tasked to serve ten masters by granting each of them three wishes, Long gained the power to grant wishes, which gave him a limited power to warp reality. But his wishes could not include killing anyone, time-travel and he couldn't make people fall in love with anyone else. As demonstrated when he first met Din, Long could conjure virtually any object; such as gold, carriages, animals, fine attire, he could change a person's form; such as giving them the "strength of a thousand men", the wings of a hawk, the body of a giraffe, and thanks to a wish Din made accidentally, Long revealed he can also give someone skills, such as the skill of a kung fu master (from Din wishing he could fight while he felt his life was in danger) Din's second wish was "to be a princeling" but since Long misunderstood at first and couldn't give Din all he wanted; regarding his actual wish Din amended it to having wealth and material possessions of a princeling for only 24 hours. During the mad fight over Long's teapot, Long granted Pockets' wish to turn whatever he touched into gold, the Short Goon's wish to be taller and the larger goon's wish to have enough puppies to open his own pet store, and finally he granted Din's last wish to save Lia Na's father.
  • Flight: As a dragon, Long can fly as well as float/levitate through the air apaprently purely by will alone as he doesn't use wings to fly but obviously magic.
  • Shapeshifting: Long demonstrated the ability to shapeshift, mostly changing his size from shrinking or growing, but he did show he can change his actual form; such as appearing human or as a dragon costume, and in one instance he showed he grow additional limbs; when he told Din to "stop" several times.
  • Invisibility: Long is invisible to everyone around him except the owner of his teapot (his current master) as evident when he interacted with his surroundings, such as picking up a tv, but this was seen by a bystander as the tv floating in the air.
  • Illusions: When he revealed the truth about himself and his past human life to Din, Long demosntrated the ability to create illusions to illustrate his story; such as showing an illusion of his old palace, himself in human form, his subjects and his children. The illusions resembled transparent outlines of colored light or energy.
  • Teleportation: Din demonstrated the power to teleport or magically transport himself and anyone around him in a puff of magical smoke.
