It is the sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018).

It was released in the United States on June 2, 2023, while a third film, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, is set to be released on June 4, 2027.

Plot[]

Sixteen months after the events of the first film, on Earth-65, Gwen Stacy is struggling to live up to her father’s expectations, who does not know she is Spider-Woman and is hunting her in revenge because of that universe's Peter Parker's death which she did not cause. One night, after hearing about a possible intruder in the Guggenheim Museum, she heads over to confront the threat, only to run into a Renaissance-themed Vulture that comes from an alternate universe. Shortly afterwards, Miguel O'Hara and Jessica Drew arrive through portals and subdue the Vulture. In the aftermath, Gwen reveals herself to her father who is distraught and attempts to arrest her. Drew suggests to a reluctant O'Hara that Gwen join the "Spider-Society", to which O'Hara begrudgingly accepts. The three then leave Earth-65.

Back on Earth-1610, in Brooklyn, Miles Morales is adapting to being Spider-Man as well as struggling to live up to his parents' expectations while mourning the departure of Gwen. On the day of his evaluation at school with his parents, he visits a convenience store where he encounters Spot, a scientist who got infused with portals on his body in the aftermath of the explosion of the collider at Alchemax. After a brief fight, Miles subdues Spot, but he eventually breaks out and confronts him again and brings him to Alchemax, blaming him for his dilemma before accidentally transporting himself into a void where he begins using his portals to travel to other universes with the Alchemax collider. Later, Gwen travels to Miles while secretly watching Spot, who created his own collider and is becoming even more dangerous. Drew contacts Gwen and instructs her to leave Miles behind to confront Spot, unbeknownst to them, Miles follows them into the portal. In Mumbattan on Earth-50101, they encounter Spider-Man India and confront Spot in the Alchemax collider, but it is too late as he turns it on and absorbs its power.

Mumbattan begins falling apart from a “canon” event, and members of the Spider-Society arrive to patch up, while Miles, Gwen, India, and Spider-Punk are sent to the headquarters on Earth-928, where hundreds of Spider-Man variants reside. They meet up with O'Hara, who tells Miles that he is risking the destruction of the multiverse, as Miles was not supposed to be in Mumbattan, though Peter B. Parker arrives to back Miles. O'Hara explains how "canon" works in each Spider-Man’s story and the fabric of the multiverse, but Miles argues that he should have his own story. He then flees after reaching his breaking point, causing O'Hara to order all the Spider-Men to apprehend Miles. After a long chase, O'Hara strikes down Miles telling him that he never was supposed to become Spider-Man, with the spider that bit him actually being from an alternate universe. Miles breaks free, heading back to his home world to confront Spot, who he realized was going to kill his father, with O'Hara, Drew, and Ben Reilly in pursuit.

Arriving back in his apartment, Miles reveals to his mother that he is Spider-Man, whom she appears to not recognize. He encounters his uncle Aaron Davis and Miles realizes he's in the wrong universe, on Earth-42, the number on the spider that bit him. Gwen, having been kicked out and sent back to her homeworld for being a liability, reconciles with her father, who has decided to quit being a police captain. Realizing that his resignation is evidence that canon can be safely violated, Gwen decides to aid Miles, leaving Earth-65 with a bootleg portal watch Hobie left with her father for her. She assembles the team of Spider-Man Noir, Spider-Ham, Peni, Peter B. Parker, Punk, India, and Byte to find Miles as Spot arrives on Earth-1610 to kill Miles' father. Miles wakes up, tied to a punching bag. Aaron questions who he is and Miles realizes that Aaron is not the Prowler, rather this world’s version of himself.

Development[]

In November 2018, ahead of the release of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse the following month, Sony Pictures Animation had begun development on a sequel to the film, due to the "incredible buzz" surrounding the project. The sequel was set to continue the story of Shameik Moore's Miles Morales / Spider-Man, working from "seeds [that were] planted" throughout the first film. Joaquim Dos Santos and David Callaham were set to direct and write the film, respectively, with Amy Pascal returning from the first film as producer. The other producers of the first film—Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, Avi Arad, and Christina Steinberg—were all also expected to return for the sequel in some capacity.[13] In December 2018, Pascal revealed that the film would focus on Morales and Hailee Steinfeld's Gwen Stacy / Spider-Gwen, exploring a romance between the two characters that had been cut from the first film. She added that the sequel would serve as a "launching pad" for a previously announced female-focused spin-off film starring Steinfeld.[14]

In November 2019, Sony officially confirmed the sequel, setting a release date of April 8, 2022. Lord and Miller were confirmed to be returning as producers. Lord indicated that the film would include the "Japanese Spider-Man" from the 1978 Spider-Man series. Lord revealed that design work for new characters in the film had also just begun.[15] In March 2020, comic book artist Kris Anka revealed that he was working on the sequel.[16] In April 2020, Sony shifted the film's release date to October 7, 2022 when making changes to its film schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[17] In May 2020, Sony entered in a promotional partnership with Hyundai Motor Company to showcase their new models and technologies in the film.[18] On June 9, 2020, lead animator Nick Kondo announced the start of production on the film.[19]

In December, Lord and Miller revealed that the film was being split into two parts, titled Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One) and (Part Two), because they had written down the story they wanted to tell for the sequel and realized that it was too much for a single film. Work on both parts was taking place simultaneously. The two sequels were renamed in April 2022, becoming Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. Their release dates were shifted then, with Across the Spider-Verse pushed back to June 2, 2023. Lord and Miller revealed that they told Sony the sequel would be the same size as Into the Spider-Verse, but it ended up having the largest crew of any animated film ever, with around 1,000 people working on it. They added that the film has 240 characters and takes place in six universes.

Release[]

The film was released in the United States on June 2, 2023. It was originally set for release on April 8, 2022, but was shifted to October 7 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In April 2022, the film was moved to the June 2023 date.[20]
