An untitled animated Ghostbusters film is set to be produced by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation in association with Ghost Corps and will be distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing.
Plot[]
The movie is set to be from a ghost's perspective.
Development[]
In October 2015, it was announced that Reitman will produce an animated movie for Sony Pictures Animation, with Fletcher Moules overseeing the project as both animator and director.[1] In October 2017, it was reported that the movie would be told from the perspective of a ghost.[2] In January 2019, it was reported that the film will begin production following Ghostbusters: Afterlife's release.[3]
In late August 2020, Michael Kurinsky posted character paints on ArtStation depicting concepts for various movies including Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Hotel Transylvania, and The Emoji Movie. The particular images depict designs for Ray Stantz and Peter Venkman, and a full poster design depicting the ghost protagonists in a world similar to Ghostworld from The Real Ghostbusters and the 2009 video game.[4] Similarly, he also uploaded a post depicting visual development; it showcased an image resembling a Sector Z with a no-sign gate and ectoplasm tank among others.[5] The artwork is said to be dated back to 2016.
In June 2022, during the Ghostbusters Day festivities, it was confirmed the animated movie was back in development alongside a sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife (later announced as Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire) and an animated series for Netflix. Jason Reitman and Gil Kenan are confirmed to be involved as producers. Chris Prynoski and Jennifer Kluska are confirmed as co-directors, with Brenda Hsueh helming the script. It is stated to have new characters and a new take, and was stated to be a passion project of the late Ivan Reitman.[6]
In December 2022, co-director Jennifer Kluska mentioned some details about the film, stating it "felt very right and fitting" to return to animation for the franchise. She also confirmed the film is slated to have a unique style due to Sony putting out "very consciously stylistically and tonally different" movies. It is looking for an approach that will have a very specific link to the franchise due to the technology and artistry of the medium.[7]
In March 2023, Animation Magazine revealed Lauren Sassen (story artist for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse) is confirmed to be involved, expressing her excitement about the current production in an interview.[8]

Trivia[]
- The film has been in development since 2015, while the reboot was still being made.
- It is possible that the film's development might depend on the success of Ghostbusters: Afterlife, a direct sequel to the original two movies.
- It is rumored that the film might be animated by the same crew as Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and The Mitchells vs. the Machines, as Sony attempted to patent the animation techniques in December 2018, with the Ghostbusters rumor sparking the following month given the mentions of a "different creative team".[9]
- The film was originally intended to come out in 2019 before Ghostbusters: Afterlife had any further development/production.[10]
